This record group consists of various records and cartographics of the Houghton County Road Commission. The records include: accounting records (1953-70); annual reports (1911-27, 1960-68); Baraga-Ontonagon road survey and sketch (1882); records concerning the Sturgeon River bridge and the Portage Lake bridge connecting the villages of Hancock and Houghton (1902-61); civil defense data (1959); correspondence and reports (1939-69); records relating to the construction and operation of the Houghton Memorial Airport (1941-69); minutes and proceedings of Commission meetings (1911-65); records relating to recreational areas (1940-64); road census (1951-54); personal records, records and correspondence of William L. Kaiser, road engineer (1930-65); records and correspondence of Carl F. Winkler, road engineer (1930-63); proposed millage for road tax (1968); records and correspondence concerning the inspection of Sidnaw Airport (1945-62); snow removel data (1956-56); correspondence and reports of the Upper Peninsula Road Builders Association (1943-68); and records relating to the effects of World War II on the operation of the Commission and other aspects of war work within the county. The record group also includes several maps and cartographics dealing with the Houghton County Infirmary; jail wing; map of entire surface of the Isle Royale Copper Co. (1918), the Lake Superior Mining and Industrial area (ca. 1941) and the U.S. Lighthouse property at Lake Superior Entrance, Portage Lake (1903); Nellist's Upper Michigan road map (1955); plan showing proposed drawbridge at Houghton, Mich. (1905); St. Joseph Cemetery, Hancock (1973); Sidnaw Cemetery (1940); and a sketch map showing U.S. Engineer Dept. lands, upper entrance Keweenaw Waterway (1929).

Following unsuccessful attempts at mining in Copper Harbor and on the island of Isle Royale, the Isle Royale Mining Company relocated south of Houghton in 1852. It was one of many small mines working the "South Portage Range," including the Portage, Dodge, and Huron mines.
